Are there places to go glamping in or near Acadia National Park? Most people think of Acadia National Park as a place where hiking and camping takes place, old school-style. Basically, roughing it. However, not everyone is up for roughing it. If you want to stay somewhere between rustic and resort, glamping Acadia National Park (or close to it) may be for you!

Yes. There Are Glamping Sites Near Acadia National Park

Glampers everywhere, fear not. There are places you can glamp in the vicinity of Acadia National Park. 

 

What is Glamping?

Simply put, glamping is where nature meets luxury.  It is a hybrid word from combining glamour and camping.
 
Glamour + Camping = Glamping
 
The first noted use of the term glamping occurred in 2005.  However, the concept has been in place for hundreds of years.  Often, it was only the upper class who engaged in such trips. Think of the safaris, expeditions and adventures undertaken by aristocrats and wealthy travelers of years past.   
 
Typically, glamping sites are in the wild but have many of the creature comforts of home.  You are in the rough but a few steps removed from actually roughing it. 
 
 

How can you tell a camping site from a glamping site?

 
Well, this is one case where you can probably judge a book by its cover.  Although different people may have varying ideas of what constitutes luxury, we often know it when we see it.
 
A glamping experience may involve:
 
The term often has more to do with the amenities available than the actual structure that houses them. 
 

Where are glamping sites near Acadia National Park? 

New glamping sites in Mid-Coast and Down East appear every few months. Often the sites are converted from traditional camping facilities into their modern counterparts.

Sandy Pines Campground

Location

Granted, it’s a bit of a stretch to call Sandy Pines Acadia Adjacent. However, it’s such an incredible glamping facility that I’m going to cut it some slack regarding distance to the park.  I travel cross country to come to Acadia and you don’t hear me whining. Sheesh!

Sandy Pines is located in the heart of Kennebunkport, Maine. The grounds are a few minutes from Goose Rocks Beach and Dock Square.

 

Amenities

Sandy Pines is a large site that features amenities that let you know that you are glamping. Incidentally, if you have any old-school campers in your party who may scoff at the terminology, feel free to describe it as a really fancy campsite.

Accommodations

In truth, Sandy Pines does offer simple tent camping for those who are not looking for a luxury glamping experience. If no frills simplicity is what you’re after, ask for the Coleman Experience.

However, since this article is all about the glamp, let’s skip ahead to the higher end  accommodations.

Camp Cottages

These cozy 12 x 16 rooms can accommodate up to two guests. They feature a king-size bed, cooler, fire pit and patio seating. They are tiny home-style on a mobile platform.

Family Cottages

Family Cottages accommodate up to 2 adults and two children, The rooms measure 14 x 24 and feature twin bunk beds along with a king sized bed. Also, there is a cooler, fire pit and patio seating. They are tiny home-style on a mobile platform.

Hideaway Huts

Hideaway Huts are the next step in the progression to full-on glamping. These A-frame structures accommodate up to two guests. They sit on a mobile platform and are designed to maximize natural light and air flow.  Each room features a full size bed along with your own fire pit.

Glamp Tents

Glamp Tents are designed in several configurations, depending on your party size. Each tent offers 430 square feet of living space. They are all outfitted with king sized beds, chairs, decks. The Glamp Tent area located in a well landscaped portion of the grounds. Also, a new shared bathhouse is available for use. 

Dogs are permitted the seasonal, tent and RV areas of Sandy Pines but not in the glamping areas. 

Season

Sandy Pines opens early May and closes in early October.

Woodlands Oasis Tent Glamping

The distance from Acadia National Park to Woodlands Oasis Tent Glamping in Jonesboro, Maine is 60.5 miles.

Location

Woodlands Oasis Tent Glamping is located in the small coastal town of Jonesboro in the Down East region of Maine. Population is just under 600. Most impressively, this site is on site at a working goat dairy farm and organic blueberry field. Also, bring your passports and take the one hour drive in Canada. 

 

Amenities

Woodland Oasis is outfitted with a tent, futon bed and tables.

There are only two glamping tents available at this time so be sure to reserve early in the season

  • Bell Tent
  • Working Farm
  • Self Serve Breakfast Nook (Goat cheese and berries, anyone?)
  • Flannel Sheets and Extra Covers upon request
  • Air mattresses

The Glamping Tents

Woodlands Oasis has two glamping tents on site. The tents are elevated on decks and carefully positioned to capture the solitude of the woods.

Season

The Woodlands Oasis runs from May through October.

Summary

Woodlands Oasis is a good fit if you are looking for a unique glamping / working farm experience. Luxury amenities are eschewed in favor of the raw beauty of nature in Down East Maine.

The Little Yurt on Permaculture Homestead 

The distance from Acadia National Park to The Little Yurt on Permaculture Homestead in Sedgwick, Maine is 39 miles.

Location

The Little Yurt on Permaculture Homestead is in the coastal town of Sedgwick, Maine. If you are into birdwatching, Sedgwick is your town!

 

Amenities

The 24′ Little Yurt is on an active homestead. It sounds cool (and it is) but you should be aware of the set-up.

There is only one glamping tent available at this time so be sure to reserve early in the season

  • Drinking water & wash water comes from a hand pump. No, it’s not just a novelty pump for photo opps. You will be using it all though your stay.
  • Composting toilet is in an outyurt (yes, that is a word).
  • In-yurt electricity 
  • Small fridge, coffeemaker, hotplate and gas grill.
  • Shared outside warm water shower. 
  • Farm animals. Personally, I find this charming but if you are annoyed by roosters in the morning, take this into consideration.
  • Garden, ponds and trails to explore.

 

Accommodations

The 24′ Yurt

Your spacious 24′ yurt includes 3 beds. One full, one twin and one twin foam trundle.

Season

The Little Yurt is open from late May though mid-September.

Summary

The Little Yurt on Permaculture Homestead is the place to go to get your 60’s flower-child on. Even though it sounds a little like roughing it (if you’re used to the hotel experience) most guests report a very enjoyable relaxing stay.  It is relatively close to Acadia National Park.

Also, you love saying “Yurt,” admit it!

Glamping Wall Tent on Organic Farm

The distance from Acadia National Park to Glamping Wall Tent in Franklin, Maine is 23.5 miles.

The Glamping Wall Tent on Organic Farm is located in the scenic town of Franklin, Maine. The Wall Tent is not only close to Acadia National Park but also backs up to the Sunrise Trail. In case you didn’t know, the town of Franklin was named after Ben Franklin!

 

Amenities

Simplicity and a connection to nature are what you’ll find at the Glamping Wall Tent.

  • Cook stove with pots and pans
  • Small oven/toaster
  • Composting toilet is on the back porch.
  • Coffee machine
  • Canoe available for guest use on Little Horseshoe Pond. Just ask!
  • Roaming chickens, ducks and dogs. This is definitely a plus for our family!
  • Hot shower is available in the main house.
  • Fire pit.
  • The main house is also where you go for Wifi. 

 

Accommodations

Wall Tent

The Wall Tent is located on a quiet section of the property. It has one bed but your hosts will hook you up with sleeping bags if you ask.

Season

The Wall Tent is open from late April through mid November.

Summary

The Wall Tent is great for couples or small families who want a little bit of edge to their glamping, without going too crazy. Hosts Becka and Jeff get tons of praise for their hospitality. Not surprisingly, the Wall Tent gets a lot of visitors.

The Treehouse Near Bar Harbor is located in Hancock, Maine. Located on the head of Frenchman Bay, prepare for stunning views of Mount Desert Island! Also, did I mention it’s a tree house???

Forget the tree houses of your youth. This is 2019 and this tree house is stacked with modern amenities.

The Tree House accommodates up to 8 guests. There are two bedrooms. Three queen beds, one sofa bed and one crib. 1 1/2 baths.

The Treehouse near Bar Harbor is open most of the year. Check their calendar to see available dates.

Summary

The Treehouse near Bar Harbor is both luxurious and private. At 900 square feet of elevated living space, you will feel like you’re on the closing scene of Animal Planet’s Tree house Masters

The Treehouse is great for a romantic getaway or family fun. On top of it all, the Treehouse is dog friendly. No need to leave Fido at home.

The Treehouse is a unique living space and Acadia National Park is less than 20 miles away!
